Alberta has the lowest legal age in Canada and one of the most developed private retail markets, overseen by Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC).
The basics
- Legal age: 18+ (the lowest in the country)
- Where to buy: Privately owned licensed stores, or online through AGLC’s official site (the only legal online retailer).
- Possession: Up to 30 g in public.
- Home growing: Up to 4 plants per residence is permitted.
Where you can consume
Allowed in private residences and some public spaces, but banned where children gather, at hospitals and school properties, and near building entrances. Municipalities set additional rules.
Buying legally in Alberta
Only AGLC-licensed stores and AGLC’s online store sell legal, lab-tested cannabis. Check for licensing and clear potency labelling when comparing options.
